Mapmaker Thriller   »       «

Richie, in mapping the area notices that some archaeological sites are under threat. Robert Bates, the forestry manager, is unhelpful but his wife Jane, reveals that a survey years earlier was abandoned when one of the team, a local man Peter Nolan ‘disappeared’ after allegations that he had informed on two IRA men, killed in retaliation for their involvement in the death of a
UDR soldier.

One day Richie stumbles upon the body of Peter Nolan, the
alleged informer.

Both Nolan’s young son, Cub Nolan and Nolan’s widow are grateful to Richie but continue to protest Nolan’s innocence.

Richie mysteriously receives a tape of the man’s confession, which he later considers to be another threat from Kieran Maguire.

Richie is dissuaded from leaving by Cub Nolan and Jane, who he learns is the sister of the UDR man killed in the earlier violence.

Richie discovers an irregularity in the informer’s confession and a clue as to where the truth might lie hidden in a landmark.

The local policeman, Inspector Devlin confirms to Richie that Nolan was not the informer, suggesting that the man who framed Nolan may still be active and responsible for current tensions.

Richie uncovers a plan for violence on the first march of the season and the identity of the real murderer, who confronts him for a final showdown after a tense chase through the forest.

But Jane and Cub are not far behind….
